President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. will begin formal negotiations with China this week —likely Monday or Tuesday — regarding the sale of TikTok's American operations. The deal involves ByteDance, TikTok's China-based parent company, transferring its U. S. assets to a majority American-owned firm, as firm, as required by a 2024 law addressing national security risks.
Trump stated that the U. S. has "pretty much" reached an agreement but acknowledged that China's approval will likely be necessary. Talks may involve Chinese President Xi Jinping or his representatives. The deadline for ByteDance to divest its U.S. assets has been extended to September 17,2025.
Earlier efforts to finalize the deal stalled after China objected, particularly in response to new U.S. tariffs. TikTok, which has around 170 million American users, expressed support for the ongoing negotiation and said it would continue working with U.S. officials to ensure the platform remains available.
